Unbreakable - Kami Garcia

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Coming home from a night out with your best friend and finding your mother dead is bad enough, but to then find out that, apparently, you have to take her place in a secret organization dedicated to fight and destroy demons is even worse. Especially since she didn't know anything about it. Being saved by sexy Lukas and Jared and whisked away to the Legion's lair leaves Kennedy's head spinning. At first she thinks the others are crazy, but after witnessing the spirits for herself she begins to feel like she belongs.

Let me tell ya! This is a creepy book. Also, it proved to me that my dislike for cats is totally valid.

The ghosts get creepier and creepier as the story progresses, ending with a frightening confrontation with many angry spirits that reside in an abandoned prison. Kennedy uses her special ability of a photographic memory to get them out of trouble, but even though they think they are doing the right thing, they might be making things worse.

I can't wait for the sequel, UNMARKED, which comes out October 7, 2014.
