Review

Snow started falling in the morning and increased in intensity during the day. Conditions were deteriorating so fast that Tattawa Regional High School released students at 1:00 pm, hoping to allow time for the kids to get to the safety of their homes before the blizzard snowed everyone in. Scotty and his friends, Pete and Jason, decided to stay and work on a go-kart in the Industrial Arts room, planning to have Jason’s dad pick them up in his 4 x 4. After all the buses left the school, the boys made their way to the shop to get to work. When they decide it was time to go wait for Jason’s dad in the gymnasium, they see there are 4 other students that hadn’t been picked up yet either. Les, the trouble maker everyone was kind of afraid of; Krista and Julie, pretty, freshman girls; and Elijah, a strange sophomore. Together, they anxiously wait for headlights to approach the school. They wait for cell phone calls to go through. The wait for the snow to stop. They wait for the worst blizzard in the history of the United States to end.I had such high hopes for this story, but it didn’t live up to the excitement the book jacket flap implied. I never really formed a connection with any of the characters. In my opinion, the conditions in in the school didn’t get bad enough. However, I didn’t have a problem with the ending, in fact I felt it was a very realistic conclusion – if only the middle of the story could have been better.
