Ellie and six of her friends convince their parents to allow them to go camping in the bush over Christmas break. They find a way into Hell – a place thought to be unreachable due to its jagged cliffs and dense brush. The group enjoys a week of camping in a place practically untouched by humans.
When it’s time to return to the “real” world, Ellie and her friends reluctantly pack up and hike out of their secret retreat. When they arrive home, all of them are shocked to see their houses empty. It doesn’t seem like anyone has been in the houses for a while – in fact, many of the animals are dead from lack of food and water. Not knowing what happened, they decide to retreat to Hell to regroup and formulate a plan.
Eventually, Ellie and her friends find out Australia was invaded by an unknown foreign country. All the people of Wirrawee have been captured and confined. Not knowing if their families are alive or dead, the seven teens decide to sneak into town to learn as much as they can about the situation.
TOMORROW, WHEN THE WORLD BEGAN follows the dangerous adventures of Ellie, the narrator of the story, and her friends as they do whatever they can to fight against the invaders. They use guerrilla warfare tactics to inflict as much damage as they can on the enemy. Their missions aren’t easy and things don’t always go as planned. This is only the first book in a series of seven and once you get to the last page, you’ll want to go directly to the second.
I loved this book. As a person who grew up in the 80’s, it reminded me of the movie Red Dawn.
