Review

Absolutely amazing! This re-envisioning of the classic fairy tale is captivating. Valerie lives with her family in an isolated village that has been held in the grips of fear for years. A werewolf has terrorized the village once a month since before Valerie can remember. Each family takes turns providing an adequate sacrafice in order to keep the wolf at bay. When Valerie was seven-years-old and it was her family's turn to provide the animal, she slipped out of the house in order to attempt to rescue her precious pet goat from slaughter. She came face-to-face with the beast instead.
Ten years later we find Valerie a bit restless with her surroundings, in a love triangle, and in the middle of a wolf rampage. After her sister is murdered by the wolf during the Blood Moon, the village goes into a panic. The local priest sends for support to help bring down the wolf. Once help arrives, the people in the village become suspicous of each other because they find out the wolf lives among them as human during the day and becomes the beast during the full moon.
Who is the wolf? Who can Valerie trust? Should she marry Henry, the weathy young man she is betrothed to or should she throw caution to the wind and run away with Peter even though he is hated by everyone in the village?
RED RIDING HOOD is a wonderful mix of new and traditional story elements. The reader will hang on every word of the wonderful narrator, Erin Moon. In addition to the narration, a beautiful score is included during pivotal moments of the story. I can't wait to see the movie.
